Rachel Weisz tends to stay out the spotlight, however this week she made an elegant return to the red carpet at the premiere of her new series, Dead Ringers. It’s a six-part series, launching on Amazon Prime Video later this month, which is a remake of David Cronenberg’s 1988 psychosexual horror film of the same name.

In the past, the star has typically favoured minimalist dresses for public appearances – we recommend you revisit her quietly brilliant ’90s looks for evidence – and it seems her understated style preferences still stand. Rather than selecting a new-season look to wear for her upcoming project, the actor delved into Valentino’s archives – together with her stylist, Kate Young. They settled on a beautiful velvet gown from the house’s autumn/winter haute couture 2011 collection  in a rich fiery red colour.

The chosen floor-sweeping dress, which features a braided halter neck strap and empire line cut, made its debut some 12 years ago, but it evokes a timeless quality that is perfect for a modern red-carpet setting. Weisz brought it right up to date with natural make-up and her raven hair worn in a loose middle-parting and tucked behind her ears, which is the simple beauty look she’s relied on for decades. She said in a video on Instagram about her make-up artist Genevieve Herr and the finished look – “Genevieve is a genius, I love her.”

“I loved turning 40, the idea of turning 50 is fantastic,” Rachel Weisz pondered in a Vogue interview in 2012. Now, aged 53, the actor certainly looks fantastic, staying true to the personal style and approach to hair and makeup makeup she’s had on the red carpet for decades.
