Tesla Model Y hitch installation steps

1. Remove cargo panels

Prior to installation, we will need to prep the vehicle for the addition of the hitch. To start this, we will need to remove the cargo panels found in the rear of the vehicle. This includes the rear threshold panel, the cargo tray on each side of the car, and the center storage tray. Many of these items will feature push pins which can be removed with a flathead screwdriver.

2. Remove tail lights

The vehicle's tail lights will also need to be removed to assist in the removal of the rear bumper. The rear side panels will need to be opened to allow access behind each tail light. Once you have gained access behind the tail lights, there are 2 nuts holding them in place which can be removed using the 8mm socket. After these nuts are removed, the plastic plug on the top can also be removed allowing the tail light to now be detached.

3. Remove rear bumper

Moving the tail lights to the side, there is a bolt present that can be removed to start the process of removing the rear bumper. Next, the underbody panels can be removed with the 10mm socket. Following this, there is a bolt located near the wheel well on each side of the vehicle that can be removed allowing the bumper to now come off.

4. Remove rear bumper beam

To remove the bumper beam, its three flange nuts will need to be removed using a 15mm socket. This rear bumper beam will not be re-installed.

5. Install trailer hitch

The hitch can now be raised into its proper position on the vehicle’s frame. The hitch should be aligned with the access points where the rear bumper beam was previously located. The same existing flange nuts can be re-installed to secure the hitch.

6. Tighten and torque hitch

After the flange nuts have been properly installed to the hitch, we will now need to tighten and torque the hardware according to the manufacturer's specifications.

7. Re-install removed bumper and cargo panels

With the hitch installation complete, we can now re-install the rear bumper, taillights, and cargo components.

You should now have your trailer hitch installed on your Tesla Model Y.
