Zubin Mehta to conduct concert in Kashmir

Mumbai-born maestro to perform with orchestra on banks of Lake Dal in Srinagar next month

Among the few unfulfilled ambitions left to celebrated Mumbai-born conductor Zubin Mehta is to perform in India's conflict riven Kashmir Valley.

On Wednesday, an announcement by a provincial government official signalled that this dream may soon come true.

The troubled state's tourism minister Ghulam Ahmad Mir told local reporters on Wednesday that Mehta will be conducting a concert next month on the picturesque banks of the Dal Lake in Srinagar in a garden created by a Mughal emperor.

The idea of a western classical music concert in Kashmir took root last year when Mehta visited Delhi.

The Indian-born star announced at a state reception at the German embassy: "I wish one day I could play in Kashmir. I will cancel every appointment to come and do that."

Mehta has spoken nostalgically of a trip he made to Kashmir and the mountainous Ladakh region with his wife Nancy Kovack and their children in 1974.

"We fell in love with it," he told the IANS news agency. " The Ladakhis would follow my wife because she was tall and blonde."

Kashmir has since suffered decades of violence. A separatist Muslim insurgency, launched in 1989, has killed thousands of civilians and soldiers.

The relative calm of recent years can still be broken with eruptions of violence.

On Tuesday, the Indian army reported that five of its soldiers were killed in an early morning cross-border raid on Indian positions by insurgents and Pakistani soldiers. An incident that Islamabad has denied.
