Students can work on the short vowel ŭ sounds with letters, pictures and word cards that can be used in small groups, centers or individually. Sorting mats and worksheets are also available in this all in one resource.

Resource Prep: Each of the center games should be printed on cardstock and laminated to use yearly.. Directions for each game are on each center game. Note: You may use as many cards as you want for each game and some game boards may be printed back to back to save on cardstock. Worksheets can be just copied on regular copy paper for the number of students you have.

Resource Directions:

Short Vowel ŭ Letter Cards: Large & small versions on short vowel letter cards are available to use with vowel introduction, to use with sorting mats, small group activities & centers. There are both the large and small versions of each of the five short vowels.

Short Vowel ŭ Picture Cards: Picture cards for Short Vowel ŏ sounds and the other vowel sounds. These cards can be used in vowel introduction, use with sorting mats, small group activities and centers.

Short Vowel ŭ Word Cards: Word cards for Short Vowel ŏ sounds and the other vowel sounds. . These cards can be used in vowel introduction, use with sorting mats, small group activities and centers.

Short Vowel ŭ Sorting Mats: There are three different types of mats: one to sort two different vowels; one to sort three different vowels; and one to sort four different vowels. These mats can be used in small group instruction or for center activities. You choose which vowels you would like to sort and give them the picture cards that will go with the vowels you have chosen for them to sort.

Short Vowel ŭ Worksheets & Answer Keys: There are four different types of worksheets that include: color the correct short vowel ă pictures; cut and paste vowel sort; find and; and write short vowel ă word from word bank; and write the short vowel ă words. Answer Keys are provided for all worksheets.

Games to Play:

Short Vowel ŭ Picture Card Sort: Choose which vowel cards students are sorting and the sorting mat they are using. Students take the picture cards given and sort the cards under the correct vowel card .

Short Vowel ŭ Rhyming Picture and Word Match: Choose picture or word cards that rhyme. Children can play in partners, small group or by self matching short vowel picture or word cards that rhyme. The person who has the most matches wins the game

Short Vowel ŭ Sound Match: Matching Game: Children match the pictures short vowel word with the correct short vowel letter sound. Memory Game: Children can play this by placing the cards face down in rows. They take turns turning two cards over to see if the letter card and picture matches. If it does, they keep both cards, if not they turn the cards back over and the next child has a turn. The person who has the most matches wins the game.

Short Vowel ŭ Picture and Word Match: You can choose certain cards to use in the game or use all cards at once. Children can play in partners, small group or by self matching short vowel picture cards with the correct word card. You can play the above matching and memory games with these cards. The person who has the most matches wins the game.

Short Vowel ŭ Word Game(s): You can choose certain word card in the game or use all cards at once. Word Game: Children place cards face down and take turns drawing a card. If student can read the word, they keep it, if they cannot they must put it back. They must read all their cards, the person who has the most cards wins. Memory Game: Make two sets of the word cards and children place the cards face down in rows. They take turns turning two cards over to see if they have matched the same words. If it does, they keep both cards, if not they turn the cards back over and the next child has a turn. The person who has the most matches wins the game.
