    Are you looking for some practice activities for the short vowel sounds? This resource is for you! Practice all five short vowel sounds, ă, ĕ, ĭ, ŏ, ŭ with these center games & worksheets! You have a variety of games to choose: Short vowel sounds picture cards, word and sentence reading, and word building activities. Have some fun while learning the short vowel sounds!

    Resource Prep: Each of the center games should be printed on cardstock and laminated to use yearly.. Directions for each game are on each center game. Note: You may use as many cards as you want for each game and some game boards may be printed back to back to save on cardstock. Worksheets can be just copied on regular copy paper for the number of students you have.

    Resource Directions:

    Stars Short Vowel Picture & Letter Sound Match: Matching Game: Children match the pictures short vowel sound with the correct short vowel sound word. Memory Game: Children can play this by placing the cards face down in rows. They take turns turning two cards over to see if the short vowel sound word matches the picture short vowel sound. If it does, they keep both cards, if not they turn the cards back over and the next child has a turn. The person who has the most matches wins the game.

    Short Vowel Rhyming Match Game : Matching Game: Children match the pictures that rhyme together. Memory Game: Children can play this by placing the cards face down in rows. They take turns turning two cards over to see if the pictures rhyme. If they do, they keep both cards, if not they turn the cards back over and the next child has a turn. The person who has the most rhyming matches wins the game.

    Apple Short Vowel Make a Word Game: Students insert the short vowel apple card onto line on the word cards and make words. Students can write words on white boards or paper. They may also use the Make A Word worksheets included in this resource.

    Pencil Short Vowel Word Game(s): Word Game: Children place cards face down and take turns drawing a card. If student can read the word, they keep it, if they cannot they must put it back. If they draw a sign card, they follow its directions, take another turn or lose a turn. They must read all their cards, the person who has the most cards wins. Memory Game: Make two sets of the spelling word cards and children place the cards face down in rows. They take turns turning two cards over to see if they have matched the same words. If it does, they keep both cards, if not they turn the cards back over and the next child has a turn. The person who has the most matches wins the game.

    Book Short Vowel Make a Word Family Game: Children take a star consonant, digraph or blend card and put it in front of a word chunk book to make a word. Children can write word on paper or white board or use one of the worksheets to go with this activity.

    Sun & Cloud Short Vowel Picture and Word Match: Children can play in partners, small group or by self matching the cloud picture with the word on the sun. Children place the sun on the cloud when they have a match.. You can choose certain blend sounds in the game or use all cards at once.

    Short Vowel Roll It! Read It! Words & Sentences: Two types of game cards with short vowel sounds words and sentences. There are 5 short vowel ă word game cards and 5 short vowel ă sentence game cards, 10 game cards in total. Students roll one dice and read the words or sentences in the row they have rolled.

    Short Vowel Worksheets: Students can use these worksheets with the center games or on their own using letter tiles to make words.

    Kids have some short vowel fun while learning with these centers & worksheets!
