When Tatler hung out with Birdy at Glastonbury

By Ella Baldwin

You might know Birdy, 21, for her cover of Bon Iver's 'Skinny Love', which has over 130m views on YouTube and launched the then 14-year-old's stellar music career. Or you might know her for her latest hit, 'Wild Horses', or recognise her as the face of the Valentino Red campaign. But what you probably don't know is that Birdy's real name is Jasmine Lucilla Elizabeth Jennifer van den Bogaerde, and that she grew up in the grounds of her family's estate, Pylewell Park, in the New Forest.

The granddaughter of Lord Teynham, Birdy is a descendant of the Roper-Curzon clan. Her childhood is full of happy memories spent running around the grounds of the 1,500-acre family seat with her many cousins, who also grew up nearby. 'My family is massive!' says Birdy. 'My mum is one of 10, so we've got loads of cousins and we see them all the time.' If she wasn't playing outside or swimming in the reservoir, she was playing music. All her family are musical - her mother, Sophie, is a classical pianist, her brother, Jake, plays the drums and her younger sister, Caitlin, is a talented singer. 'I used to go to my friends' houses and if they didn't have a piano or any instruments, I would think, "What the hell? What's wrong with you?" It was weird to me.'

We caught up with Birdy in the EE garden at Glastonbury and found out everything there is to know about the singer and songwriter:

  1. The video for 'Skinny Love' was filmed in the attic of Pylewell Park. The spectacular house is now used for weddings and private events, as well as being the home of the Curious Arts Festival and Rawfest.

  2. She flew the nest to Notting Hill a few years ago, but recently moved back home again. Her mother is thrilled and makes her breakfast and supper every day. 'I've completely forgotten how to be independent!'

  3. Birdy knows how to party - she turned up at Glastonbury with no festival essentials and no plans for where to stay. Her logic? 'When you're only at Glastonbury for one night, you're probably not going to sleep anyway...'

  4. It would be wise to wear protective padding if you meet Birdy just before a performance. 'I always have the urge to hit people. I get so aggressive!'

  5. Want to know how she got the nickname Birdy? It's because of the way she used to open her mouth when being fed as a child. Awww.

Quickfire round:

Lycra or chiffon? Chiffon.

Marmalade on toast or hair of the dog? Hair of the dog.

Glamper of Camper? Camper, but I'd love to be a glamper.

Sunrise or sunset? Sunrise.

When you're in the crowd, would you rather be at the front of the stage or in a relaxing seat at the back? Relaxing seat!

Thanks to EE for keeping Ella and Birdy connected and recharged during the festival.
