Stilt Fishing

Stilt Fishing is a traditional style of fishing practised by local fishermen in Sri Lanka, especially on the southern coast. With a perfect balance and an insurmountable amount of patience, fishermen perch themselves on cross-shaped beams and wait for their catch of the day!

Our team at Taru Villas - Rampart Street will help you plan your day and sort out transfers to witness the stilt fishermen in action! You can even put your balance and patience to the test as you perch yourself on a stilt too. Even if you don’t catch your dinner; it’ll be a great photo opportunity to take back home – but don’t worry, our chefs back at the villa will be sure to cook up a seafood dinner so you don’t miss out.

A Look Into Stilt Fishing

  • Stilt fishermen are often seen in the coast around Galle, in towns like Koggala or Ahangama.
  • Some fishermen might charge you a small fee, whether you're taking a picture of them or yourself on their stilts.
  • Experienced fishermen will give you a step-by-step explanation on how to catch fish while perched on a cross-shaped beam. Try your hand at it too.
  • Should you do get lucky and catch a fish, bring it back to our chefs and they’ll prepare it the way you like!
