Ryan Reynolds gets personal

Ryan Reynolds stars in The Proposal with Sandra Bullock. Here, he talks about his special connection to the marry-for-citizenship romantic comedy.

Ryan Reynolds in The Proposal“Right
here,” Reynolds says and points to himself. “I actually am Canadian. I can’t talk about Green Card issues right now. I have a deal with the INS going.”

Ryan as riveting comic

Obviously, Reynolds is hysterical. If it seems Reynolds has come from nowhere to become a Hollywood leading man with a steady flow of
recognizable projects, it’s because he has.

From stealing scenes from Wesley Snipes in Blade: Trinity to his star-making turn in Definitely, Maybe, Reynolds has what it takes to become the next George Clooney: He’s
dashingly gorgeous with impeccable talent in both drama and comedy.

Married life

Reynolds recently married Scarlett Johansson, and the two lovebirds are enjoying being newlyweds. But at this moment, Reynolds is away from
his bride, sharing insight with us on starring with Sandra Bullock in The Proposal.

In his role as a verbally tortured assistant, he is compelled to marry his boss so she can stay in the country and continue to bring their company enormous success. The gig showcases Reynolds’
comedic nirvana.

the interview

Ryan Reynolds: I’m only going to talk about the contracting economy. That’s all I’m going to talk about.

SheKnows: But the hysterical nude scene with Sandra is a little more interesting to our readers.

Ryan Reynolds: Well, it was weird at the snack table. It was odd. At that point, shame is a foregone conclusion.

SheKnows: After knowing each other for years, that scene had to have other challenges.

Ryan Reynolds: You don’t normally combine nudity with stunts. [But in this movie we had] these scenes where we’d slam into each other and fall to the ground. I would always
know something popped out wrong because I’d see the camera man go, ‘Oh….!’ By hour four, I abandoned the fake leaf or whatever they gave me, and I was throwing caution (and other
things) into the wind as well.

SheKnows: Did you learn anything new about Sandra Bullock from The Proposal?

The Proposal for Ryan Reynolds: Marry Sandra Bullock

Ryan Reynolds: Mostly, birthmarks. I learned about birthmarks that I wasn’t aware of. Chemistry is something that is impossible to manufacture — it’s either there or it
isn’t. The fact that you’re friends doesn’t necessarily equate to great chemistry, so we learned early on that we had it. I was so grateful for that. It’s one of the few
magical things about film that still exists. There’s no way to manipulate that. And we have it!

Boasting about Betty

SheKnows: And Betty White: Talk about a legend. Betty White is amazing, I couldn’t see the movie without her…

Ryan Reynolds: I could see the movie without her. I like the attention on set, and then Betty comes on. Betty actually has the best exit line I’ve ever heard for a
movie. Her last day — I’ve never seen a crew give such a standing ovation to somebody. Grown grips with ZZ Top beards crying because Betty’s leaving. Betty turns around and says,
‘I want everyone to know that this the most fun I’ve ever had on a film set.’ Everyone’s crying, and she walks to the door, turns around and adds, ‘Standing up.’

Mary Steenbergen and Betty White help Ryan Reynolds in The Proposal

SheKnows: Oscar Nunez, from The Office, will surprise some people with his bachelorette party dance.

Ryan Reynolds: Oscar is able to express unbelievable amounts of vulnerability in a single look that is hysterical while being bordering crazy.

SheKnows: What’s up next? Deadpool?

Ryan Reynolds: Deadpool is in the works… That’s all I can really say. I’m into any role where I can kick Captain America in the nuts.

SheKnows: In The Proposal, your character is an assistant to an evil boss, as played by Sandy. Ever overheard a volatile Hollywood moment with someone and her assistant?

Ryan Reynolds: We’ve all had the moment where the agent thought he hit “hold.” That sounds like Hamburger Hill in there!

Singing Sandy’s praises

SheKnows: You’ve known Sandy for years, and now you’ve starred alongside her. What do you think is the secret to her success?

Ryan Reynolds: I’m not one to mythologize other actors. Obviously, Sandy’s a gorgeous woman. But the reason people fall in love with her is that she doesn’t seem
to know it in a way that other gorgeous women [do]. That makes her so accessible. And she has the ability to laugh at herself. Every time I’m around her, I want to be like her. I want to be
married to Jesse James and live in that great place.
