By SU Public Relations

SALISBURY, MD---Bijayini Satpathy, recognized as one of the foremost masters of Odissi – one of the eight classical dance forms of India – is in residence at Salisbury University Tuesday-Friday, September 12-15.

Events include:

  • September 12: Odissi dance lecture and demonstration
  • September 13: Odissi dance workshop
  • September 15: ABHIPSAA: A Seeking original solo performance

All events are 7 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Odissi is celebrated around the world for its lyricism, sensuality and devotion. Satpathy has enjoyed a vast career in the artform as principal dancer, master teacher and respected scholar, embodying the spirit and storytelling of classical Indian dance.

ABHIPSAA: A Seeking, which was commissioned by Duke University, the Baryshnikov Arts Center and Salisbury University, charts a journey of discovery in physical, emotional, and spiritual realms. In four choreographic works Satpathy expands the parameters of the formal and representational norms of the Odissi tradition through both narrative and non-narrative dances - reimagining classical Odissi forms through a personalized interpretation.

Admission is free and the public is invited. This work was made possible with additional funding from the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
