Portrait of Samata Sakuma, (1844 - 1915). Military officer. Born in Yamaguchi, the son of a samurai of the Hagi Clan. He studied Western military science under Masujiro Omura. He served in the Boshin War. In 1872, he entered the army and became a captain. He took part in the Saga Rebellion. In 1906, he became the 5th governor-general of Taiwan. Inoue Kowashi ( 井上 毅 1843 – 1895) was a statesman in Meiji period Japan. He fought on the imperial side in the Boshin War to overthrow the Tokugawa bakufu. After Ōkubo’s assassination, he worked closely with Itō Hirobumi and Iwakura Tomomi, and became a member of the Genrōin.

Yamamoto Yaeko (1 December 1845 – 14 June 1932), also known as Niijima Yae, was skilled in gunnery and took part in the defense of Aizu when the Boshin War broke out in 1868. Later she served as a nurse during the Russo-Japanese War and Sino-Japanese War, and became the first woman outside of Imperial House of Japan to be decorated for her service to the country.
