Full Name: Julia Elizabeth Wells
Profession: Actress and Singer

Nationality:

British

Biography: Eternally best known for her portrayals of Mary Poppins (showing remarkable forbearance in the face of Dick Van Dyke's much maligned cockney accent) and Maria in "The Sound of Music".

Andrews was a child star in England, making her West End debut as a young teenager. In 1954, she made her Broadway debut in a supporting role, eventually starring in musicals such as "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot". She was passed over for the film adaptation of "My Fair Lady" due to the studio wanting a bigger name, giving the role to Audrey Hepburn instead.

Andrews did make the transition to the silver screen, in the same year (1964), garnering accolades for her performance in the title role of "Mary Poppins".
Further film and stage roles, such as "The Sound of Music" and "Victor/Victoria" (film and stage versions), and assorted television specials followed.

In 1997, throat surgery caused permanent damage to her vocal chords, ending her singing career. She continues to act, including roles in "The Princess Diaries" and "Shrek" film franchises. She is also an author of children's books, with her daughter Emma.

Andrews was married twice - to British set designer Tony Walton from 1956 to 1968, with whom she had a daughter, and then to American film director Blake Edwards (Breakfast at Tiffany's; Pink Panther films) from 1969 until his death in 2010.

Born: October 1, 1935
