Biography: Benjamin Franklin was a polymath, inventor, scientist, writer, and statesman.

Franklin was born relatively poor but moved to Philadelphia as a young man where he soon became a successful printer, publishing the "Pennsylvania Gazette" and "Poor Richard's Almanack.” He founded important institutions like the Library Company of Philadelphia, the American Philosophical Society, and the University of Pennsylvania.

After making his name as a newspaper editor and printer, Franklin also went on to make major scientific contributions, especially in the study of electricity. He inventions include the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove. These experiments and inventions led to international recognition, including receiving the Copley Medal from the Royal Society.

As a statesman, Franklin played key roles in the American Revolution and securing French support. He helped draft the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Later he served as the first ambassador of the United States to France, working to strengthen ties between the nations.

Franklin was an early advocate for abolishing slavery and integrating African Americans into society. He promoted religious tolerance and moral values like hard work and frugality in his popular writings.
