蒼鷺屬於大型鷺科鳥類，是臺灣普遍的冬候鳥，常見牠們在淺水區慢條斯理地尋找獵物。上半身主要為蒼灰色，腹部為白色，體長可達1公尺。高蹺般的雙腳、細長的脖子與尖銳的嘴喙，是捕獵魚類與小動物的極佳工具。蒼鷺以魚及青蛙等動物為主食，常佔據河流的一段當成覓食區域，當有其他同類侵入領域時，會發出尖銳的叫聲驅趕之。雙方在空中激烈纏鬥數回合，互相追趕。勝利者佔據地盤，失敗者只好落荒而逃，這樣的打鬥看似激烈，卻很少造成嚴重的傷害。

The grey heron (Ardea cinerea) is a large bird in the family Ardeidae and a common winter migratory species in Taiwan. It often searches for food in shallow waters. Its body and wings are grey above and its underparts are white. At up to one meter in height, this bird possesses stilt-like legs, long thin neck, and pointed beak, which it uses to capture fish and frogs. It occupies an area of a river where it hunts. If another heron invades its territory, it will emit a sharp call to drive it away. These two grey herons are fighting in mid-air. The victor can stay, while the loser has to leave. Although such fights appear intense, they rarely lead to serious injury.
