Healthy Blueberry Yogurt

Yogurt is one of our go-to breakfasts, and I love how easy, filling, and versatile it is! I like to buy a large container of plain yogurt as it is more cost effective and enjoy as is, add to all kinds of recipes (like smoothies, muffins, and dips), and turn into flavored yogurt!

Yes, you can purchase blended yogurt at the grocery store. But they contain high amounts of added sugars and artificial flavors. Making flavored yogurt at home is ridiculously easy! All you need are fruits and one or two other ingredients and a food processor or blender.

This blueberry yogurt is naturally sweetened and bursts with freshness and zing, thanks to the lemon! Low sugar + creamy texture + tons of flavor is what I promise.

Ingredients

  • Yogurt – I recommend using whole milk plain Greek yogurt (4% or 5%) especially for young kids, as fat is essential for optimal brain development. You can also use regular yogurt. The only difference is the thickness. Feel free to swap with any dairy-free alternative, if needed.
  • Blueberries- you can use either fresh or frozen blueberries. Most definitely use fresh blueberries when in season for best flavor.
  • Lemon juice and zest – will help enhance the flavor of the blueberries
  • Pure vanilla extract – optional but enhances the flavor of other ingredients and adds a subtle sweetness and depth.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Add blueberries, lemon juice and zest, and vanilla extract into a food processor or blender. If using frozen blueberries, wait 10-15 minutes so they thaw enough to be blended.
  2. Blend until smooth.
  3. In a large bowl, add the yogurt and blueberry mixture. Stir with a spoon until well combined.
  4. Taste and add some honey or maple syrup, if needed.

Storage

To Refrigerate

I like to store 1/2 cup portions in small airtight containers. That way I can easily grab one from the refrigerator in the morning along with various toppings.

It will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

To freeze

You can also freeze any leftover blueberry puree in an ice cube tray (I love this silicone tray), so you can thaw small amounts at a time.

Simply pop out the frozen cubes and transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. They will be good for up to 3 months.

You can thaw in the refrigerator overnight or add frozen puree to smoothies or whole grains, like oatmeal, quinoa, or lentils.

Not only will the cube(s) melt quickly, it will help cool down the grains so you can serve to your baby immediately.

What are the best blueberries for yogurt?

I most definitely recommend using fresh juicy blueberries when in season for best flavor. But Frozen blueberries will work as well.

You can also use either regular or wild blueberries, which are generally smaller in size and have a more intense flavor. They also tend to have higher levels of antioxidants and fiber compared to regular blueberries.

Why does my blueberry yogurt taste tart?

Blueberries contain natural acids and the level of acidity in blueberries can vary depending on the ripeness of the fruit and variety.

When blueberries are not fully ripe, they taste tart due to the higher concentration of acids. As they ripen, their sugar content increases and the acids become less pronounced.

If your blueberries taste too tart, you may need to add some honey or maple syrup to the puree. I suggest starting with 2 teaspoons and adding more as needed. If you want to avoid added sugar (which is recommended for kids under 2), try adding some applesauce or date syrup.

You can also cook the blueberries, after blending, for about 10 minutes to mellow out the acidity.

    I had fresh berries and wanted a healthy snack. I used a lime that I had in the fridge. No honey as I love the tartness of the lime. I will be adding this to a regular snack or breakfast. Going to try the blueberry mixture over oatmeal.
