As others have said, Lode Runner has aged extremely well. I consider it one of my all-time favorite games.

Almost 40 years later and this game still stands the test of time. It's a perfect combination of puzzler and arcade runner. You need lightning reflexes and the ability to strategize, all while counting vertically and horizontally to make sure you don't dig yourself into a hole you can't escape.

The game is very responsive and the single character-sized Lode Runner meant the levels were much larger by comparison. Add 150 levels and the included level editor and you have endless playability. I've played many other ports and sequels of this game and this is still the best.

Not sure how anyone who actually had a C64 in 1983 could possibly rate the game any less than a 10. In 1983 at least likely in North America, this was the best, most loved popular game. It's smooth, looks great and was a first and going into the 3 decade of the 21st Century still perfect smooth and playable. Sure, it got passed by in the horde of games to follow, but in retrospect a definitive C64 classic. For example when they released the C64 mini, this and many other other popular American C64 games, if possible should have been on there - but you'll note the absence of such games, easily the most popular games on the system and responsible for boosting the C64 into record sales (sorry this was not due to UK game companies  like all the pathetic UK-propaganda youtube video documentaries seem to like to portray and glorify)

Fun and addictive as mentioned below. I just get impatient with the screen taking sooo long to redraw! Does anyone have a version that does not do that?

A flawless masterpiece. Not only the gameplay but the game itself is perfect. No need for fancy grafix, no need for better sound, it would only distract from the game. Did all the 150 levels with a friend of mine (2 we couldn't figure out), and then we made our own levels. I consider the game to be rather on the easy side (you can jump to the level you last played)) and definitely not too difficult, every level could be finished once it was "understood", maybe because no need for pixel-perfect jumping... A plattformer where jumping is not even possible! I love it!!
Bytheway - try out the Championship version for comparison.... Those levels are a challenge.

My favorite C64 game, along with Elite and Summer games. Just an endless great time. I also had a ball creating my own levels.

Very simple graphics and sound enhance the atmosphere of this game, pure playability, a timeless classic that stands up there with any game of its era on any system or in the arcades.

Once again, if you're a fan of C64 games and you don't own this one you need to slash your own wrists. This is right up there with M. U. L. E. , Jumpman, Red Baron, and Elite. A MUST HAVE!

This game is a perfect example of why the 8-bit era was the golden age of gaming. A simple concept with simple graphics and sounds that came together to form one of the most playable and addictive games of all time. Some levels are so difficult that it will take you dozens or even hundreds of tries to complete them yet you won't get frustrated and you won't be able to walk away. It's just that good. The best part is that there are so many versions with so many levels and if you finish all those, fire up the editor and make your own. What more could you ask for?

Great game and I love the level editor. The classical graphics are simple yet superb, esp. The flamehead stick figures, reminiscent of the bushwackers in Sirtech's Wizardry. The animation of digging a hole looks a bit too much like a dog taking a "corn", but that is a very minor complaint. Warning: Don't ever play the NES version. Pure suckfest.

This game is simple, brilliant, and fun. The gameplay is easy; just run around picking up gold. You can also dig holes in the ground to make a quick escape or to trap your enemies (AI is great). This is like a platformer mixed with Tetris since it makes you think. There are a brickload of levels in this game and I wasn't even close to bored after hours of continuous play.

I love everything about this: the game, packaging even "Broderbund" is a cool name!
Greenie 2004-02-21
I loved this game as a kid, and it's inarguably a classic, but I just can't get into it now. Gameplay is slow and, at times, impossibly difficult, without much variety or excitement. I spent a lot of time with the level editor back in the day, so maybe that's where my fondness for this game comes from.
Ahmad 2003-12-24
This is such a nice game to play, I was hoping it could work when I loaded up, but it won't load up the game which is a petty for me because it's another one of my favourite games on C64. I still loved it.
peter 2003-11-11
Cool to play one of my alltime favourite games again!
worf 2003-09-18
I love it :-)

Many thanks to Doug Smith and Dane Bigham

I had a disk with 50 self-made-levels, but lost it :'(

There are serveral versions in the net for the C64:
Loderunner (datasette)
Loderunner
Loderunner 2
Loderunner 4
Loderunner 5
Loderunner Championship (nice level-set)

Loderunner Rescue (3D-Loderunner)

all playable with ccs64 on your PC
Squonk 2003-09-14
In my opinion, this game show how simplicity can be fun and efficient... Lot of pleasure to play this game even if I never reached the level 100, this was a great concept for sure. Broderbund made some great game... Loderunner, raid on bundgelingbay and castles of doctor creep... Thankd broderbund !

Lode Runner is a "Lode" of crap. Simple overall and boring to play.
Lemonope 2003-04-11
Every1 talks about this a lot and I could never see the appeal.
Guus 2003-03-04
This game is one of the all time classics for me, only equaled by krackout, it's 20 years old though
Jason Campbell 2003-03-04
The C64 version was better than the arcade version. I remember the later levels were insanely fast! Addictive fun. My favourite platformer
Carcharias 2003-02-17
Simple but violents graphics with red & black.. 150 levels it's huge and don't forget to increase or decrease speed with keys '+' or '-'
Peter Ho 2003-01-14
Good game, but it's still too difficult.
meian 2003-01-07
Lode Runner truly shows how a simple game can be hours of fun. Simple graphics, great animation. Monotonic sounds and, yes, hours of fun.
Viceroy 2003-01-05
A great game indeed.

Lots of fun with this game. Neat concept. So many different screens.
Arto Suvitie 2002-11-29
A true classic! Spent hours with this one :)
blagger 2002-10-19
I was crap at this. Very. I always felt the bad guys were replaced much too fast and the digging took too long. Frustratingly difficult.
Mr.2 2002-09-04
A classic. Simply the best. After all those years, its still giving me the same fun. 10/10
Muesli 2002-08-22
This game is great, a totally new concept never reached again. No comparable games are available today (just simple and mostly bad clones of this game). Even the graphics were simple but very good...
devlin 2002-06-23
One of the best C64 games ever - I've spent hours with the construction set! 10 points!!!
DeAdLy_cOoKiE 2002-05-10
A classic. Very fun to play.
Christian 2002-04-16
This game really rules. I used to play it hours and hours and it never got boring.
stefan 2002-03-12
Simply one of the most playable games of all times. Simple but effective, as the best games always are
fordmercury 2002-02-19
When my son was 10, he's now 25, he was in plaster and this game kept him amused for days until he completed it, and gave me a break from "waiting" on him. I also sat and watched him get through some levels which also entertained me, so I think this game should get at least 10 points.
Ric 2002-02-02
To me, this game deserves a 10, it's been right at No. 1 in my C64 favorites. The animation, the puzzles, the level editor (disk), number of available levels (disk), all added to a game that could easily lead me to waste and entire day & sometimes a night! Another Apple conversion, and I thank Broderbund for that, from the bottom of my heart.
