RUDOLF KEMPE
The conductor signs his name in blue ink beside a book
photograph
Signatures: "Rudolf Kempe", in blue ink, 5¼x3¼. Unsigned
photograph of Kempe affixed to top left corner. Rudolf Kempe (1910-1976)
was a German conductor, known for his work presiding over operas and
orchestras. Playing oboe and piano while studying at the Dresden State Opera
School, Kempe switched over to conducting after being a répétiteur for the
Leipzig Opera. During World War II, Kempe was drafted to service, but instead
became involved in the army's music department and played for the troops. After
the war, he conducted for several operas and orchestras, having a particularly
long association with the Dresden orchestra. Kempe became the Royal
Philharmonic Principal Conductor from 1961 and 1962 and subsequently it's
Artistic Director from 1963 to 1975. During his time with the Phillharmonic,
Kempe broke the male-only rule, allowing females into the orchestra. Fold in
center. Surface creases. Stained across album leaf. Heavily toned. Corners
clipped. Otherwise, fine condition.
