A simple search on Google as to why everyone loves Ryan Reynolds will provide you with an infinite amount of reasons, from his newfound love of Wrexham and his Ted Lasso-esque understanding of ‘soccer’ to his partner in crime, Blake Lively known for bating him at every opportunity. There is also a fair amount of love for the nonpareil timing of his staunch humour, and no-one is subjected to this more than his friend/foe Hugh Jackman.
From unlikely musicians to A-listers flexing their best street style, this week offers an eclectic mix of watches in the spotlight. With only one Rolex on the list, it shows that this summer’s celebrities are a studied lot
On the big screen, Reynolds is renowned for his satirical stint as vigilante Wade Wilson in Marvel’s Deadpool franchise, and ever since it was announced last year that Jackman's Wolverine would be coming out of retirement to star in Deadpool 3, the wise cracks between the duo haven't stopped – with Jackman most recently saying he's keen to score a winning goal against Wrexham AFC.
While anticipation grows for the Reynolds vs Jackman Marvel showdown, we figured it would be fun to pit their watch collections against one another. While Jackman was a loyal Montblanc ambassador from 20216 until recently – racking up classics like the Heritage Spirit Moonphase and 4810 Automatic Chronograph as well as a Montblanc's connected watch, the Summit 2+, it's Reynolds who has acquired a much more eclectic watch collection, on and off screen. He's recently been spotted donning the ever-practical Apple Watch with a funky strap, but there's plenty of firepower sitting pretty at home.
The Proposal for Panerai
The method behind such mania of becoming another person on screen means that for most actors, they look to share something with their cinematic counterparts to feel closer to them. For Reynolds, that means a love for Panerai, showcasing the unrivalled visibility of the Italian-Swiss horologists both in front and behind the lens. Untether your magnifying glasses and you’ll notice a Panerai Luminor Marina PAM on Reynolds’ wrist in the 2015 action-thriller Self/less. But catch him walking the Pound Ridge neighbourhood of NYC and you’ll also spot him clocking a white dial Panerai Luminor Marina PAM, too. Method acting of a sort.
An ode to Omega
With less than two months until the first Monday in May, we’re reminded of the spectacle of the Reynolds/Lively 2022 stairway entrance, now immortalised in the annals of the MET Gala’s history. Some remember it for Lively’s theatrical dress reveal, but for us it was Reynolds’ watch reveal: an 42mm Omega Speedmaster Moonshine Gold with a green dial – perhaps an ode to that time he and Lively excelled in Green Lantern?
But Omega isn’t just a statement for the spotlight. Reynolds carries his Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon in close companionship in daily life – it's a nod towards Omega’s first trip to the moon on Buzz Aldrin’s wrist in 1969. The love doesn’t stop there either, as Reynolds has donned his Speedy in Netflix’s The Adam Project, certifying that the galactic watch model really was made for a man of the cosmic Marvel universe.
The addition of an Altiplano
Reynolds rounds off his stellar watch collection with an ultra-thin Piaget Altiplano. He also likely has a few Polo Dates too after Reynolds’ affinity for the Swiss matchmakers was rewarded with him being an ambassador for a few years.
A credit to Chopard
Where Ryan Reynolds is versatile in performance, he harbours the spirit of difference in his watch collection too, as shown in Underground 6 when he pops an impressive Chopard Mille Miglia GTS Power Control Grigio Speziale on his wrist. Dexterous in learning entire scripts, Reynolds will have no problem recalling that moniker, complete with a 43mm titanium case, a matching grey dial and red accented details, as it's almost the most memorable thing about the whole movie.
The crux of the collection
Lest we be forgetting the signature piece that typifies Reynolds’ carefree playful nature entirely. The watch of all watches, the grail of all holy grails: The Adventure Time Wristwatch in Deadpool. Now sorry Hugh, but that really is an heirloom for the kids.
