The Bearss lime tree, also known as Persian lime or Tahitian lime tree (citrus × latifolia), is a popular citrus fruit tree that grows fruit valued for its tart, juicy and classically delicious flavor. The juice of Bearss limes is less acidic and slightly sweeter compared to other lime varieties, making them popular for their balanced and tangy taste. It is a variety of the Key lime (Citrus aurantiifolia) and is widely cultivated for its culinary uses, whether it be desserts, beverages or to add flavor to savory dishes. They are typically medium-sized, round or oval in shape with smooth, thin, green skin, which turns yellow when fully ripe.
Bearss lime trees are one of the easiest citrus trees to grow, and, under suitable conditions, can be grown successfully indoors as well as outdoors. They are prolific fruit bearing trees and growing fresh limes can be very rewarding both for the beginner or the experienced grower. In containers, the Bearss can grow anywhere from 4-10 feet tall, and can be kept compact with regular pruning. In the ground, a semi-dwarf Bearss lime tree can reach heights of 10-15 feet tall.
Here's some information on the Bearss lime and how to grow a semi-dwarf Bearss lime tree in a pot or container:
1. Climate and Location: Bearss lime trees thrive in warm, tropical to subtropical climates. They require full sun to produce the best fruit, so choose a location in your garden or yard that receives at least 8-12 hours of sunlight each day.
2. Soil: Bearss lime trees prefer well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.0). There are many soil mixes on the market, as well as some do-it-yourself recipes. We recommend our Primo Potting Mix, which is a combination of orchid bark and orchid mix.
3. Planting in the ground: For in-ground planting, plant the tree in a prepared area about 3x the diameter of the pot, and as deep as possible. That soil should be well-draining and loose, allowing for root growth. Plant your tree at the same depth as the pot, keeping the crown of the roots just above the soil line. Water thoroughly after planting.
If you're planting your tree in a container, choose one with excellent drainage. It is very important that citrus tree roots do not sit in siggy or waterlogged soil. A starter pot is about 10-14", and you can expect to repot again as the tree outgrows its pot, usually after two more years.
4. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Bearss lime trees do not tolerate standing water. Water deeply and regularly, especially during hot and dry periods. You know it's time to water when the top 1-2" of the potting mix is dry.
5. Fertilization: Fertilize your lime tree with a balanced fertilizer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Our recommendations are Romeo Fertilizer or G&B Organics Citrus & Fruit Tree Fertilizer. Feed the tree during the growing season (spring and summer).

7. Pest and Disease Control: Keep an eye out for common citrus pests like aphids, scale insects, and citrus leaf miners. Use appropriate measures to control them. Watch for signs of diseases like citrus canker or citrus greening and take prompt action if detected.
8. Harvesting: Bearss limes are usually ready for harvesting when they turn pale yellow or greenish-yellow. You can pick them as needed, but they store better hanging on the tree vs. being picked too early and kept on a kitchen counter.
Growing a Bearss lime tree can 2-3 years from planting before it starts producing fruit. With proper care, you can start expecting fruit regularly by year five. Once your tree is mature and established, you can then enjoy a steady supply of delicious limes for years to come.
