Chances are, you're used to using red, white, or rosé wine to make sangria. While there's nothing wrong with embracing the classic recipe, we're finding ourselves reaching for Evie Negri-Albert's orange wine-based take on the summertime staple. "The acidity and funk you get from most skin-contact wines balance beautifully with some sweetness and fruit," she explains.

Frequently Asked Questions

What orange wine should I use to make sangria?

When making sangria using an orange wine (also known as skin-contact), opt for a funky option from Georgia, where producers have been fermenting white grapes on their skins for over 8,000 years, using earthenware vessels called qvevri. Here's a list of some of the best orange wines to drink now.

What kind of brandy should I use to make sangria?

You probably have brandy in your home bar already. Cognac, Pisco, and Grappa are all different types of brandies, and once you add a bottle to your collection, you'll be surprised at how versatile it is.

How should I serve a batched cocktail?

If you are not serving your cocktail in a punch bowl (with lots of ice), it’s important to add dilution to your cocktails if you’re serving them individually. The general rule of thumb is to add 20% of water to your total volume of the batch (or about ¾-1 oz per serving). This will properly dilute the cocktail, which usually happens when you either shake or stir a cocktail individually.

Ingredients

Honey Syrup

  • 1/2 cup honey

  • 1 cup hot water

  • 1 750ml bottle orange wine

  • 1/8 cup honey syrup

  • 1/2 cup brandy

  • 1 cup pear juice

  • 1 medium pear, diced

  • 1 orange, sliced

  • 4 cardamom pods

  • 2 tarragon sprigs

  • Club soda (as needed)

Directions

Make honey syrup

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together water and honey until combined.

Make Orange Wine Sangria

  1. Toast cardamom pods in a small pan on medium heat until fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside.

  2. Roughly dice your pear and slice the orange. Add to a large pitcher along with honey syrup, brandy, pear juice, and the entire bottle of wine.

  3. Add the toasted spices (once cooled), along with the tarragon sprigs, and allow sangria to chill in the refrigerator overnight (or at least 4-6 hours).

  4. To serve, remove the cardamom pods, and pour into your glass of choice over ice. Top with club soda (you want to make sure you add some fruit and herb bits to your glass as well!).
