Event Details

Local educator Jeffrey Lowen will present a lecture about Italian opera, Giuseppe Verdi and his influence on the Risorgimento movement, the 19th century campaign that led to the unification of Italy. Lowen will play clips of Verdi's music as part of his presentation.

Verdi and his music are closely associated with the Risorgimento. Born in 1813, he became an artist during a period when Italy was fragmented into various states, each under separate rule. His famous compositions would come to resonate deeply with the aspirations of young people yearning for a united Italy. Operas such as Nabucco became anthems of hope and resilience.
