Daniel Radcliffe has paid a warm tribute to Peter Shaffer, the Equus playwright who sadly passed away on Monday (June 6).

The Harry Potter actor honoured renowned writer Shaffer, who died at the age of 90 after suffering a short illness, by saying he'd be "forever grateful" for having his blessing to star as Alan Strang in the West End and Broadway productions of Equus.

"Peter Shaffer was and remains one of the UK's greatest playwrights," Radcliffe said in a tribute posted to Google+.

"He created challenging, moving and fantastically theatrical work and was also an incredibly kind, generous and funny man.

"In my career Equus remains one of the most important and valuable things I've ever done in terms of how much I learnt from it.

"I will forever be grateful to him for trusting me to play the character of Alan Strang at a time when I had extremely limited experience on stage. I feel very privileged to have worked with him and will miss him."

Equus starred Radcliffe as a disturbed teenager who blinds six horses. He was a newcomer to the stage when he got the part in 2007.
