Hugh Jackman briefly spoke with a photographer over the weekend amid his separation from Deborra-Lee Jackman after 27 years of marriage.

Keeping his comments short and polite, Hugh said in a video published by TMZ, “It’s a difficult time,” and also told the photog, “I appreciate your thoughts, man, thank you.”

The former couple confirmed their split to People on Friday and said that they were “blessed” to have spent the last three decades together and are pursuing their own “individual growth” going forward.

Their full statement is as follows:

“We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth. Our family has been and always will be our highest priority. We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.”

They added, “This is the sole statement either of us will make.” (To be fair to Hugh, his comments to TMZ were less of a “statement” and more of a polite answering of questions).

As a reminder, Hugh and Deb met in 1995 and married a year later in 1996. The reason for their split is unknown, but things between them seemed pretty great in April, when Hugh wrote Deb an anniversary note on Instagram that read, “I love you Deb. Today is our 27th wedding anniversary. 27 YEARS!! I love you so much. Together we have created a beautiful family. And life. Your laughter, your spirit, generosity, humor, cheekiness, courage and loyalty is an incredible gift to me. I love you with all my heart.”
