Why this petition matters

Started by Asher K

This petition is to help reintroduce two letters into the English alphabet and language, Þþ (thorn), and Ðð (eth). These two letters both used to be in English, but have since faded from use. They represent "th" sounds. You may not know that there are two different "th" sounds in English. One is like in "this" and the other is like in "thing." If you hold both sounds, you'll notice that during one your vocal cords vibrate and during the other they don't. This distinction is how you can tell the difference between words like thy and thigh. Þ represents the sound in which your vocal cords don't vibrate, as in the word thing, and ð represents the sound in which they do, as in the word this. Reintroducing these letters would have many benefits. It would make English easier to learn as a foreign language. It would bring written English closer to its history. It would also, after getting used to it, make english easier to read. Icelandic has ðese letters in its alphabet, so most electronic devices already have support for ðem. I hope I have convinced you to help bring ðese letters back into the alphabet and language. Please sign ðis petition to help bring back þ and ð!
