When a prefix is followed by the hard sign «ъ» + 🎧

Sep 21, 2023

Dear learners 👋, this post is about ● spelling, ● pronunciation, ● word building, and ● verb aspects, at one and the same time.

As we discussed earlier, the verb prefix «с-» is an indicator of a completed action, so it’s used with perfective forms, e.g. слета́ть (from лета́ть), сре́зать (from ре́зать), etc. But this time we will focus on what happens to the word spelling, when the prefix is added to such basic verbs that start with a vowel. As you can see in the photo, the prefix is separated from the basic verb by the hard sign «ъ». It shows that the initial vowels «е», «ё», «ю» or «я» in verb roots do not play their soft-indicating function, and the prefix «с-» (or its final and only consonant «с») remains hard. In other words, it is ‘protected’ by «ъ» from the influence of the following soft-indicating vowel, and thus does not become soft. A part of the verb following the hard sign «ъ» is pronounced in absolutely the same way as it is pronounced when having no prefix. Please, listen to the pronunciation of the given verbs here ⤵️

Спасибо.
