In this class students will be exploring the vessel strictly through hand building techniques. We will focus on techniques such as pinch, coil, slab, hump/slump molds, handles, spouts, lids and glazing!

Pinch: Create a vessel by hand using only the pinch method. Students will explore how to use their own finger prints to create volume and repetition through pinch patterns.

Coil: Coiling with and without a form for support. We will also be exploring the use of large and small coils and discussing the best application for both.

Slab: Students will create a vessel using slabs. Part of the class will be dedicated to learning the proper way to scratch and score (+making a scratch and score tool) slab rolling, gauging slab thickness, and troubleshooting any issues that may arise during the creative process.

Hump/slump molds: We will be using every day bowls, containers, and objects as well as foam cutouts to create unique forms. We will also discuss how to use plaster as a hump, slump, or press mold.

Handles, Spouts, and Lids: There will be a discussion as well as a demonstration of various ways to create handles, spouts, and lids. Students can choose to create a new form using the coil, slab, or pinch method or simply alter a previous weeks project.

Glazing: The last week will be spent glazing the work that students made during the course. Students will learn how to use things like wax resist, under/over glazes and dipping glazes to decorate and finish their pieces.
