Zubin Metha has created a body of work with the world's greatest orchestras, including the Vienna, Berlin, Los Angeles, and New York Philharmonics. In the course of his career he has gained the highest approbation in the international community: an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera and honorary conductor of the Vienna, Munich, and Los Angeles Philharmonics, the Bavarian State Orchestra and Opera, and the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, he is also a recipient of the United Naions Lifetime Achievement Peace and Tolerance Award. And in this book he takes us with him along the road that brought him to the heights of success.

My Life in Music is a frank and direct account of Mehta's entire musical life. From his childhood days in Bombay, where he received his first musical education from his father, Mehli Mehta, and his journey at the tender age of 18 to Vienna to study music, on through his entire professional career, he shares with us an insider's view. We also learn everything about the “private” Zubin Mehta – about his marriages, his children, his thoughts on music and politics, especially in Israel, where he is lifetime Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic.

Very interesting, I read it in 2 days. I recommend to anyone how is interested in learning more very interesting facts about Zubin Metha.

It seems to me that this book is primarily about name-dropping. Who Zubin knows, conducted, when, where, etc. It IS pretty up-to-date having been copywrited in 2008, and there are occasional very personal insights, but not nearly enough. For a more personal look at the man and his entire life up through 1976, I would highly recommend the autobiography "Zubin Mehta" by Martin Bookspan and Ross Yockey. It contains many quotes by Zubin as well as some by his current wife. That said, I'm sure if you are a Zubin fan, you will enjoy this one also - and it does contain the answers to several questions not addressed in the first book.

Not Amazon's fault, but this is a very superficial fan-mag style (auto)biography. Mehta,a complex if not contrroversial figure, deserves more, as does the reader.

Low key, matter of fact memoir by Mehta. Of interest to those who know his work and wish to learn how he learned his craft.

I'll be happy to write a full, unbiased review when the publisher corrects my grandfather's name on page 35. I am astounded and offended. And highly biased at this point.

I looked forward to reading about the life of the conductor who first got me interested in classical music in his recordings with the Los Angeles PO in the 1970's.

The narrative was a bit too gushing in an American way for me. I still play his recordings from that era however and gained many insights into his life through the book.
