The current crisis in journalism and the ongoing commercialisation of the media have not only led to cutbacks in human resources but have given rise to concerns about freedom of reporting. International studies indicate that journalists’ working conditions have deteriorated and that economic interests are threatening journalistic autonomy. When it comes to covering stories about media policy issues or the parent media organisation or advertising clients, the selection and presentation of news is often not primarily guided by professional norms but by commercial considerations. Most studies only investigate one of these three areas of media coverage. For that reason, results cannot easily be compared across these areas. In light of growing commercialisation, there is thus a need for studies that comprise all three areas and contribute current data. Such results provide a basis for discussions on whether journalism fulfils society’s expectations regarding the independence and accuracy of news coverage. They also enable debates about whether instruments of self-regulation prove to be sufficient. National codes of ethics as the basic instrument of self-regulation are often viewed critically and seen as being barely effective. However, thorough analyses of press codes as well as discussions in light of particular ethical questions and empirical data are scarce in literature. Hence, taking the case of Switzerland, we first present the results of a standardised survey of journalists (N = 993) about working conditions and economic threats to their freedom of reporting. On this basis, we then conducted a document analysis to clarify to what extent the Swiss press code offers guidelines concerning the identified problems and provides journalists with suggestions for dealing with ethical conflicts. Moreover, ethics codes of ten other countries were analysed in a comparative perspective. The survey of Swiss journalists reveals that essential resources for researching and producing reports are quite limited. Moreover, autonomy is considerably limited in all three investigated areas of media coverage. In the view of Swiss journalists, these problems have become slightly aggravated in the last five years. As the analysis of the Swiss press code shows, the responsibility for good journalism is almost entirely delegated to individual journalists. Conflicts between ethical standards and the economic interests of the media company they work for are barely addressed. Claims concerning journalistic independence and required resources are mainly formulated in general and even conflicting terms. Thus, media self-regulation in Switzerland falls short to meet current challenges – but could be improved by guidelines that already are incorporated in the US as well as in other European codes of ethics.
