The performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in July, 1951 at the Bayreuth Festival has come to symbolize Germany's musical resurgence after the Nazi Regime. The conductor was Wilhelm Furtwangler, one of the leading Beethoven interpreters of the 20th century. This recording will be featured on Classics of the Phonograph over two weeks. Movements 1 and 2 will be heard this on Classics of the Phonograph, Saturday at 11 am on WILL-FM.
