What is Guinea worm disease?

●   Cause: Guinea worm disease is caused by the parasite Dracunculus medinensis, transmitted through water fleas in stagnant water.

●   Transmission: Larvae in contaminated water enter the human stomach and intestines when consumed.

●   Symptoms: Mature worms, reaching up to a meter, travel through connective tissue, joints, and bones, causing arthritic conditions and potential disabilities.

●   Emergence: After a year, the worm emerges through the skin, leading to painful blisters and increased infection risks.

●   Relief Attempts: Individuals seeking relief by placing blisters in water risk perpetuating the disease cycle.
