As the story goes, Eero Saarinen designed the Womb Chair at the request of Florence Knoll for a chair that is as comfortable as "a basket full of pillows." The iconic Womb Chair is indeed that! This is an authentic, vintage womb chair & ottoman by Knoll. It has a molded fiberglass shell suspended in a chrome frame and padded with foam. The ottoman is currently missing its cushion, but it will be replaced during restoration.
The price includes reupholstery, new foam, new fabric, and shining of the frame. The frame currently has some wear that may remain after it is cleaned. If preferred, the frame can be powder coated in black at no additional charge. This is a color that Knoll offers for Womb Chair frames, so it would be appropriate for this piece.
Reupholstery of Womb Chairs is quite challenging. We will work with you to pick a high quality fabric that has the right amount of stretchiness to conform to the organic shape of these pieces.
Fabric & Foam
This piece will require approximately 8 yards of fabric or vinyl.
The price above includes commercial grade fabric or vinyl from our vendor, Modern Fabrics, and long-lasting high density foam. After placing your order, our team will work with you to find the perfect fabric for your space and needs. We have a fabric room in our showroom and can send you samples to review in your home.
We use commercial-grade fabric and vinyl from well-respected makers, like Knoll, Maharam, Designtex, Camira, and others. Nearly all of it is made in the USA or Europe. They are rated for high wear and stain resistance in heavy traffic areas. Crypton and similar technologies are available, as are natural fibers, like wool. We also have materials that are kid- and pet-friendly.
Exceptional full and top grain leather is available at $300-$400 per hide (one hide = approx. 3.5 yds). Some of Modern Fabrics' ultra-premium fabrics will require a small upcharge. We can also order yardage in any colorway directly from the manufacturer at an additional cost based on the retail price.
You are welcome to supply your own material (COM). If you do, we will credit your final invoice $15 per required yard of fabric or vinyl. This credit does not apply to leather, due to the unique challenges of working with it.
Restoration Included
The price above includes supplies, inspection, repairs, sanitizing, and wood finishing to the original finish color. Our experienced, full time workshop crew uses traditional techniques and proper materials for vintage MCM furniture. To balance costs, they spend the most time finishing areas that are most visible and less time on less visible areas. We do not erase the entire history of a piece, but we make sure that it is fully functional, completely stable, and presents beautifully in an everyday setting.
Add an Ottoman
Matching custom ottomans can be added to most of our lounge chairs and sofas. We have several small, vintage footstools in-stock, many of which are not listed online. These typically cost between $250 and $400.
Our workshop crew can build ottomans from scratch using vintage or custom legs that match those of the sofa or chair. Custom ottomans can be docked to the end of a sofa to create an L-shape. Larger custom ottomans typically cost between $400 and $700. Please use the Request Info button above to inquire about the possibility of adding a matching ottoman to this piece.

Common Questions
Is this item available?
Our online inventory is current and updated within a few hours of in-store sales.
Can I have a discount?
To keep our everyday prices reasonable, we only run sales a few times throughout the year. They are timed to encourage purchases during slow seasons and offer modest discounts. Unless you see a sale promoted on our website, social media, or email newsletter, discounts are not available.
Our finished prices are often similar to the unfinished prices of other online sellers. We believe in providing fair prices that allow us to maintain the quality of our pieces and reward the talents of those who work on them.
How can I reduce the lead time?
Our workshop crew finishes upholstery projects in the order that they are received, but you can move yours ahead of those that are taking longer to pick their fabric by choosing your fabric quickly. We try to make accurate estimates of our current lead time, though it can vary under unusual circumstances. We do not offer rush services.
If you need the piece in your home right away, we offer the option for you to take it home while your project is waiting in the workshop queue. You can use the piece and then bring it back when it is ready to go into the workshop. In most cases, you will only be without it for a couple weeks. This option requires payment of the full item price in advance. Due to shipping costs, this option is primarily used by local customers.
Can the seat height be raised?
Yes, in many cases we can raise it by an inch or two with minimal impact to the look of the piece. Additionally, our high density foam tends to be more supportive than standard foam in today's furniture. Our foam does not swallow you like newer furniture can, so you actually sit higher in it.
Can I pick the firmness of the foam?
Our normal high density foam has medium firmness that is supportive, responsive, and comfortable. It has a premium feel and will maintain the shape of the cushions for years. We also have softer and firmer options.
Can I make any custom changes to the upholstery?
Yes, we can sometimes add/remove buttons and piping. We can also change the number of seat or back cushions. Other customizations are possible. Unless they require a lot extra work or supplies, there are normally no extra charges for these sorts of changes.
Can I use two different fabrics?
Yes! The cushions can be a different fabric from the body of the piece. It is also possible to put a different fabric on one side of the cushions so they can be flipped to create different looks. Other fabric combinations are also possible. There is no extra charge for combining fabrics.
Can I pick the wood finish of my piece?
The price includes finishing to the original color of the piece. We can sometimes apply minor adjustments, such as making the finish slightly cooler, warmer, or more neutral in tone. If you would like the wood finish to be lighter, significantly darker, or match other pieces in your room, there will be an extra charge. If you want a lighter piece, your best bet is to pick a piece that is already light in tone.
To preserve the value and integrity of the furniture, if a piece is by a known designer or part of a popular collection, we will only finish it in a color that it was originally offered.
