Falcon returns to MicroProse

Remember several days ago when we learned that Falcon 4.0 was leaving GOG.com and that there was some question about where the venerable flight sim was going? There is good news! Falcon is returning home to MicroProse.

Announcement

Posted just over half an hour ago to Steam, MicroProse has announced that they have re-acquired the copyright to the Falcon series. Here’s what the announcement has said:

MicroProse is proud to announce that we have re-acquired the copyright to the Falcon series games, and Falcon has officially returned to our line-up. We are thrilled to continue the Falcon franchise with new products in the future, building on the legacy of this iconic series.

The news continues as the announcement directly references the BMS group and their efforts to both keep Falcon alive and advance the sim in all kinds of different ways.

We also want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible work that the Benchmark Sims team has done with their BMS mod for Falcon 4.0. We recognize the passion and dedication that they have brought to the Falcon community, and we are committed to fully supporting their efforts in any way possible.

With MicroProse’s support, there is no end in sight for the work of the BMS Team. The future of the Falcon franchise looks bright, and we can’t wait to share more with you soon!

This is an extremely smart move as it keeps the current Falcon community onboard with the change in rights holders and acknowledges the lengthy history that the group have had with Falcon. Recent announcements, prior to all of this uncertainty, had the BMS group ambitiously tackling major updates to the core system as well as efforts to bring a second fully modeled jet to the sim.

We don’t know what MicroProse plans to do with Falcon in the future. Will there be a Falcon 5.0 at some point? Perhaps! But in the meantime it seems like Falcon 4.0 will remain available now via the Steam Store and right now there’s a 20% sale on to celebrate the announcement making it extremely affordable.

Of course it is also available on the GOG store, not only steam.

That was not an ‘of course’ for me. It seemed far from certain after the delisting from several days ago.

The thing is that it was only delisting from GOG for several hours only. It appeared again with the new publisher at the end of the past week or beginnig of the current one.

So, it is not that it has appeared today on GOG.

What is the current state of affairs regarding the F15C? I tried to find stuff on youtube but nothing turned up. Especially nothing combat related. How far are they? Or is that unknown to the public?

So far as I know there’s not been anything revealed publicly beyond the reveal that they are doing it.

Brings a smile to my face, especially since they’re trying to figure out how to continue on with the BMS team.
I can only hope BMS doesn’t hang themselves up on the “but we can’t pay back all the people from the last 20 years…” thing.
Use whatever funding is being offered to develop a great new version and then share the profits with the historical team.

This is fantastic news! The dynamic campaign alone is a standard set that no one has one close to matching, let alone surpassing. The niche could do with some healthy, genuine competition again.

Absolutely. I’ve seen a few comments made that Falcon’s greatest strength is actually in the campaign and that the sim and series could easily pivot to offering a wider selection of aircraft types that would only benefit and slot into that dynamic campaign.

      That’d be very interesting!

Sure would. If they could also upgrade the graphics, including the planning map, to 21st century standards, then I’d be in sim heaven.
