Bruno Walter conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra many times during its winter and Hollywood Bowl seasons beginning in 1939. His first Bowl appearance was in 1927.

Up until a short time before his death in 1962, he was actively engaged in the recording of symphonies from the classical romantic periods, which were his specialty. Those recordings included the entire Beethoven cycle of nine symphonies.

During his 67-year conducting career, he led most of the world's great orchestras and served as director of the Munich, Berlin, Vienna and Covent (London) operas.

The German-born conductor and composer was living with daughter Lotte and her husband, Karl Ludwig Lindt. His wife, Elsa, died in 1945, and another daughter, Marguerite, was killed abroad in 1939.
