The Red, White & Royal Blue actress, 53, got candid about how her relationship with her daughter has grown at the Room to Grow 25th Anniversary Gala on Wednesday evening in New York City. “What isn't a mother-daughter bond?,” Thurman tells PEOPLE at the event. “Good communication. I've now supplemented it with audiobooks in my adult life because it made such an impact on me,” Maya tells PEOPLE. So being read to changed my ability to comprehend language and changed my life,” she continues. “I really hope that every child gets that opportunity. And if Room to Grow can help in any way, I'm honored to be part of it.” Thurman has supported Room to Grow, an organization that provides parents and caregivers with items and strategies to help improve their growth and development, since she was pregnant with Maya 25 years ago. She revealed she was keen for people to see her mom’s funny side in the movie during an interview alongside her father Ethan Hawke, 52, with Variety last month. "I’m so excited for people to get to see my mom be funny,” Maya told the outlet. “In the last couple of years, she’s done independent comedies that, for whatever reason, haven’t seen the light of day. She’s the funniest person I know." Maya and her actor brother Levon, 21, are the children of Hawke and Thurman who wed in 1998 and divorced in 2005. The Batwheels actor then married wife Ryan in 2008 and welcomed two more children. Thurman also welcomed daughter Luna in 2012 with ex Arpad Busson.
