Sarah McLachlan is separating from her husband, Ashwin Sood, the singer tells Billboard.com.

"I haven't said anything about it because I've been terrified," she said. "But I figure … there's no good time to say it, so I just said it."

McLachlan and Sood (the drummer in her band) have been married for 11 years and have two daughters, India Ann Sushil, 6, and Taja Summer, 14 months. The Vancouver-based singer described the split as "pretty gross," but did not elaborate on the causes.

Still, fans may be able to glean some insights into the breakup from two new songs on her upcoming greatest hits compilation, Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan.

"Don't Give Up on Us" is "pretty self-explanatory," she said. "Basically [it's] just a plea to give it another chance and keep trying."

"U Want Me 2," meanwhile, is about "that really uncertain, confusing place at the end of a relationship when there's no communication or closure," McLachlan explained. "Everything's still up in the air and there's a lot of anger and sadness. It's sort of that working through 'How do we move forward … with some dignity and grace.' "
