Ms.Tris Reason 3 and 4: How I Start Up

Posted by mstrismusic on December 10, 2008

I’m gearing up for the first 4.0 tutorials. I’m new to it, but I’m familiar with Reason 3.0.

I save templates for any software I use, so I can get to work right away. I mentioned that Reason 4 has added features, maybe I’ll have to use it more to be blown away by the upgrades….

The steps are basically the same as I explained in the Reason 3 Knockin Kicks Post. This is a reminder to prepare you for the forth coming “Reason 4.0 Dirty South Tutorial” which I’ll be posting later on, or tomorrow morn….

I start with:
Two mixers (pictured above)
I add a Redrum, and route the outputs to Mixer2
I add a few Dr Rex Samplers
Because I am pre-mixing my drums within the software, I add the effects I’ll use for the drums/mixer 2 before I begin the beat

Next I’ll pick a few drum sounds, for example an 808 kick, Snare, and hat. I usually try to tweak my kick and pay attention to it while I’m adding other instruments. At this point, I have only added compression, eq, and maximizer to the drum mixer which looks like this:

Once my drums sound decent I’ll add a few nnxts or malstroms etc and begin the beat making process.

The Reason 4.0 Dirty South Tutorial will be a little on the advanced side. If you have been following the tutorials you won’t have a problem. Those new to the site, take some time to learn the basic way to start up a Reason Song, and of course questions are encouraged. I will be using chord progressions and snare rolls, all the good stuff of todays T.I, Weezy, productions :-). I’m excited, and to all emcees this will be a free promotional beat download!!~

Rewire Reason 3.0 to Fl Studio 8

Posted by mstrismusic on June 20, 2008

Today I’m gonna dive into rewire. I’m gonna use Fl Studio 8 rewired to Sonar Le. First thing I do is open my help file, and follow the instructions. So far so good. Next I decided I want to use Reason and Fl Studio later on, rewired to Sonar… So I start fiddling with the options…. 1/2 hour into this, and I’m ready to just make the beat…lol
Hmnn Fl Studio 8 and Reason..some might say ” why would you want to do that?” For me Fl Studio gives the kick a grimy underground HipHop sound, and Reason synths have better quality without as much tweaking. That’s it… no more no less… both programs are awesome. Remember I told you I am just getting deep into mixing, so right now I have to do the best mix I can inside the software then export and mix in my editor. I’ve often made beats with Reason wishing I had that grimy kick from Fl Studio… okay so here we are… I ” you tubed ” it 🙂 and found this quick video that shows how to rewire Reason 3.0 to Fl Studio 8, from the picture the producer looks young but his beat is pretty hot too… let’s get to it

Aighty I’m off to make some new heat..time to update the beat section. I’m still working on the pages but coming soon you’ll have all the Ms.Tris Beats in categories… yaay.

**All emcees stop back later I’m gonna do a ” Friday Freebie”…**

Happy Beat making To All
Pz Til Later…..

How To Track Out A Beat: Reason 3.0

Posted by mstrismusic on June 10, 2008

You have sold your first beat, and the artist ask ” can I get that tracked out?”…what the? O.k. let’s “break” it down so to speak. When you made your beat you used several different sounds and instruments. When an artist wants to record, they will usually want the beats elements separated for better control over the mix. Say the artist is rapping and needs to emphasize a verse, he/she may want to take out everything but the bass line, kick, and snare. This is impossible to do with a stereo mix, so the producer will need to separate each instrument to import into a multi track environment.

Separating the track also allows greater control over the actual master mix of the beat. You will have all your kicks, snares, bass etc. separate so when you add fx to the kick, ONLY THE KICK gets that effect. This process takes extra time, but in order to perfect your mix, you will have to do this in some way or form. Let’s take a look at how this is done on various equipment and software. I will use Reason as the main example today, and continue tomorrow with others like FL Studio 8 and later on this month, the Mpc2500. This is what I am actually doing today for Artist Ogun Oguns (pronounced Ogoon) Myspace Page

Reason 3.0 etc.
(I have only used up to Reason 3.0 so I am not sure if 4.0 has updated this feature)
You have your finished beat loaded into Reason. Next you will need to solo each instrument one at a time, and go to “File: Export Song As Audio File” from main menu. You will see in the picture below, I have pushed “S”(solo) on the Dr Rex Track I am exporting first. Once it highlights to green, all of the other tracks will be muted and the respective “M” (mute) for all other tracks turn red.
