Hasselblad XPan 35mm in NYC (35mm Panoramic Camera)

For my second NYC photography workshop in January 2016 I focused on using available light on location to light a model. This was normally daylight during the day then any existing light sources we could find for the night shoots. I chose not to carry lights and the heavier bulkier Hasselblad 501 medium format camera and instead took my new Hasselblad Xpan 35mm panoramic film camera. A rangefinder camera like my Leica cameras.
The Hasselblad XPan 35mm has panoramic mode (24x65mm) and shoots two 35mm frames side by side and also the standard film negative size of 35mm (24x35mm). Here are some example Hasselblad XPan 35mm photos in New York split by film stock.

1. XPan Panoramic Mode Photos (24x65mm):
I think this is how most people use the Hasselblad XPan 35mm camera – as a panoramic film camera. I found it perfect in New York with the cityscape backdrop.

2. XPan Standard (Crop) Mode Photos (24x35mm):
Another way to use the Hasselblad XPan 35mm panoramic camera is to shoot it like a normal 35mm camera in “crop” mode. This produces photos with the same dimensions as a standard 35mm film camera like my Leica M3. For my portrait photography the Hasselblad Xpan panoramic crop is not normally ideal so i probably use the camera in crop mode more than others do.

Wow, the X-Pan portraits are cinematic! I love all the all scenery that is included but it helps narrate a bit of a story! The film choice is outstandingly brash. Some photographers specialize in one film, but you succeeded in using a wide array of film and these helped put texture to your environmental portraits!

Xpan in crop mode looks like it’s shot with a 50mm, do you agree?
It’s close, it’s 45mm so similar to 50mm
