Tonight’s featured Mariners Classics game is Jay Buhner’s cycle in 1993 — June 23, 1993 vs. the Athletics. Follow the game tonight at 7:00 pm on ROOT SPORTS NW. A full schedule of classic broadcasts is available at Mariners.com/Classics.

Jay Buhner became the first Mariner in club history to hit for the cycle on June 23, 1993 vs. Oakland, and he completed the feat in dramatic fashion.

In the bottom of the 1st, Buhner belted a grand slam off Kelly Downs — the 4th of his career — vaulting the Mariners to a 5–1 lead over the Athletics.

When the ballgame was said and done, Buhner became the first player to hit a grand slam as part of a cycle in almost 60 years. He was the first to do so since Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx on August 14, 1933 at Cleveland, as Foxx totaled 9 RBI and hit a grand slam off Willis Hudlin in the 2nd inning.

At the time, Buhner was only the 6th player to hit a grand slam in the same game that he hit for the cycle (since matched three times).

Buhner added a double in the 3rd and a single in the 5th, both off Downs. He went hitless in his next three at-bats as the Mariners and A’s played to a 7–7 tie heading to the bottom of the 14th inning.

Leading off the Mariner half of the 14th, Buhner completed the cycle by driving a triple off the wall in right-center field against A’s right-hander Shawn Hillegas. It was his 11th career triple in his 557th career game.

Three batters later, Buhner scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch, sending the Mariners to an 8–7 victory in 14 innings.
