Canal+ is going down the rabbit hole to bring a legacy brand back to the small screen.

The French broadcaster, and its production division StudioCanal, are developing the CG toon Miffy (pictured), based on the same-name IP about a young rabbit. Dutch rights holder Mercis and Parisian studio Superprod Animation are also producing the 78 x seven-minute series.

Canal+ will premiere the new series, which targets three- to five-year-olds, in 2025. Mercis will handle sales in the Netherlands and Japan while StudioCanal and Superights will manage distribution in all other territories. Mercis also owns all merchandising and publishing rights to the new toon.

Miffy originated in 1955 through a kids picture book by Dutch artist/writer Dick Bruna. Bruna’s stories feature the titular rabbit navigating life in a colorful town with her family and animal friends. With more than 30 titles published to date, Miffy books have collectively sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

Backed by enduring popularity in publishing, the IP has expanded over the years with numerous licensing deals targeting all ages, the 2013 stop-motion family pic Miffy the Movie and several TV adaptations.

The upcoming series continues the tradition of a new Miffy series launching every decade since the ’80s. To date, four series have launched: Dick Bruna’s Miffy Storybook Classics (1984), Miffy: Colors, Numbers, and Shapes (1996), Miffy and Friends (2003) and Miffy’s Adventures Big and Small (2015).

This latest revival will have some updated storytelling and introduce new characters, such as Miffy’s young brother, Bun. “We have been very careful to keep Miffy’s positive attitude and her sense of adventure while reimagining her world to reflect today’s kids and the world around them,” said Superprod founders Clément Calvet and Jérémie Fajner in a release. “Like many families these days, her mum goes out to work while her dad stays home to look after the family. She now has a little brother and lots of diverse and interesting friends.”
