Why I Hate the “F” Word

Cussing seems to be one of the most mindless things people do, mindless in both senses.  Cussing doesn’t require any mental effort or intelligence, so it’s a repetitive, automatic response. And people who cuss don’t think about the consequences or effects on others.

I don’t like cussing.  The words are offensive to me and they are also, as I said above, mindless, effortless, space-fillers.  They used to have power to shock or make a point, but they are so overused now that they are losing that power.  Some people use a cuss word in every sentence and they don’t even know it.  The words are just mindlessly, automatically thrown in.

I especially do not like the “f” word.  A Star is Born used the “f” word over 100 times, which made me frustrated and uncomfortable. It’s ironic that a love story would overuse this word. Most cuss words describe defecation or genitalia or (the older ones) eternal damnation.  But the “f” word describes sex.  I do not understand making sex a cuss word unless it connotes rape, and that’s what the “f” word always depicts for me.   It’s always used in an insulting, demeaning, or violent way, so that’s rape, not sex.*  Why would we want to use or popularize a word that means or suggests rape?  I think this is not only thoughtless, but insensitive.  Therefore, I really hate the “f”word.

As cussing becomes more accepted, I hope we can be different.  I hope it’s obvious we don’t cuss.  Jesus said, “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. . . . But I tell you everyone will have to give an account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.” Matt. 12:34, 36.  And Ephesians 5:4 cautions us, “Nor should there be any obscenity, foolish talk, or coarse joking, which are out of place for God’s people, but rather thanksgiving.”

*The only exception to this I see is “wtf” which doesn’t make any sense.  It was originally “What the hell?” short for “What in the hell?” which, although still cussing, at least makes sense.  It suggested the thing being cussed about was so bad or confusing that it originated in hell or was straight from hell.  “Wtf” doesn’t mean anything.
