The Illusion of Separateness Written exclusively for the 2021 Community Arts Grant administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council, The Illusion of Separateness is a collaborative journey between Jordan Ryder and Brian Mark; a new work for choreographed dance, violin, loop station and delay processing pedals that explore the concept of “social distancing” that we have all had to face since March of 2020. This work was derived from spatial confinement to explore new ways of contact without touch, creating the illusion of connection and separation at the same time. The Illusion of Separateness depicts the universal feeling of isolation, loneliness, and being distant in empty large spaces, whilst at the same time the sounds of the different type of feedback loops will break down that illusion to emphasize that although we were not able to physically be within close proximity with one another during the onset of the pandemic, we were unified by this experience and found a semblance of community in a new way. The Illusion of Separateness was premiered at the Old Stone House of Brooklyn on October, 17, 2021. The Illusion of Separateness was sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC). * Please note that this score is indicated with instructions specifically for the BOSS RC-300 Loop Station Pedal (Tracks and Loops over each insert/loop) and the Boss DD-7 Digital Delay Processing Pedal (with down arrows indicated of when to press and lift). This work could also be performed with Ableton Live (which would include both internal sets of loop and delay settings) instead of the hardware pedals, as the performer would have to work out their own settings within the software for a live performance.
