In June 2013, Jönköping County Council signed the membership agreement with ICORN and became Sweden’s seventh city and second region to join the network. Jönköping County was the first County Council in Sweden to become a member of ICORN.
We support freedom of expression and our aim and object is to become a Region of Safe Havens with several cities that invite Guest Writers.
In February 2014, Region Jönköping County welcomed Julia Olivera, a poet, writer and human rights defender from Honduras.
Jönköping County is located in the south of Sweden, between the three major cities of Gothenburg, Malmö and Stockholm. It has more than 340 000 inhabitants and consists of 13 municipalities. Jönköping is the largest of these, with almost 134 000 inhabitants, and is located at the southernmost tip of the second largest lake in Sweden, Vättern.
The region is working towards becoming a dynamic cultural area, with a growing range of diverse artistic activities. In Jönköping there is a new cultural center, Kulturhuset Spira, and the municipality of Värnamo has a regional and international art and design center, Vandalorum.
In 2017, a human rights congress will be held in Jönköping.
