Leading recognition for the quality of service at Kansai International and Santo Domingo airports

September 16, 2021

Kansai International Airport, which has been operated in Japan by VINCI Airports and its subsidiary Kansai Airports since 2016, has made it into the top 10 of the Skytrax (World Airport Awards 2021) ranking of the world’s best airports for the first time in its history. It is also a historic first for Santo Domingo airport, a member of the VINCI Airports network since the same year, which is now in the top 10 in the Central America and Caribbean region.

Built on a man-made island in Osaka Bay, KIX is the main gateway to the Greater Osaka region of Japan and the closest international airport to Kyoto and Kobe. Kansai is home to the world’s longest terminal and is a hub for Japanese airlines. In order to continue to ensure the best possible quality of service, VINCI Airports has launched work to modernise the airport’s Terminal 1 – the largest works carried out at Kansai International Airport since it opened in 1994. The aim is to create more capacity, improve operational efficiency and enhance the passenger experience without building a new terminal – an approach that optimises existing space and meets VINCI Airports’ environmental objective.

In the Central America and Caribbean region, the award comes as las Americas airport reached 85.2% of pre-crisis (2019) traffic and surpassed Punta Cana Airport’s traffic for the first time in its history. This is a great recognition of VINCI Airports’ investments to improve the airport’s service quality and environmental efficiency in the country. Between 2017 and 2019, the 6 Dominican airports reduced their carbon emissions by 20% despite the growing number of passengers. As a consequence, in 2020, Aerodom became the largest private producer of solar energy in the Dominican Republic, thanks to the expansion of the photovoltaic park at Las Américas airport. By the way, at the beginning of November, Santo Domingo airport officially opened the doors of its new cargo terminal, with a 6,800 sq. metre warehouse. The works, carried out by VINCI Construction Grands Projets and representing an investment of some €14 million, will facilitate the development of Dominican exports by bringing together in a single space all the players and services in the goods transport chain.
