Raise your hand if you haven’t been confused by BMW’s motorcycle nomenclature at one time or another. Anybody? Bueller? Although a version of the F650GS that arrived in 2008 was, actually, an 800cc twin-cylinder machine, fans of BMW’s lighter, nimbler one-lung dual sports always thought of the F650 that debuted way back in 1992. A joint venture with Aprilia, the F650 single originally used a Rotax 652cc, liquid-cooled single in a steel frame. As BMW’s first one-cylinder model since 1966, it was a success, especially in the F650GS adventure-touring version that BMW called the Funduro. At the same time BMW introduced the F800/F650GS twins, the F650 singles became the G650 series. Again with the names!
But BMW, naming conventions aside, had hit on a successful strategy. The F650/G650GS models were always lightweight and easy to ride, and in the BMW dealerships of the day were considered the ideal entry-level Beemer. They were priced right for the market, and that gave F650GS and G650GS owners the chance to customize and accessorize the mini ADV machines into surprisingly capable dual-sport mounts that could do some light touring and were absolutely at home on city streets or highways for the daily commute. That they got great mileage helped.
DENALI’s offerings for the BMW F650GS and G650GS (including the G650GS Sertao) are robust. There is a model-year-specific light mount for the G650GS from 2009 to 2014 and the F650GS from 2000 to 2007. This sturdy, powder-coated light mount bolts on easily and supports any of DENALI’s LED motorcycle driving lights. For those same model-year F650GS and G650GS bikes, DENALI makes a special mount of the SoundBomb single-piece, louder-than-heck motorcycle horn. Of course, the F650GS models are good to go for DENALI’s various other conspicuity products, including the B6 two-level tail light (crazy bright and merely very bright in one package), T3 Modular Switchback Signal Pods, fender-mound DRL Visibility Pods (in white or amber), and a bunch of mounting schemes for crash bars or fork tubes. DENALI’s Switched Power Adapter also works on the F650GS and G650GS models.
Time marches on and BMW has replaced the 650cc F650GS with the G310GS in American dealerships, but fans of the midsized thumper are very much still with us. It’s one of BMW’s most popular models, which has proven to be durable and fun to ride. And at DENALI, we can make even an older F650 learn a few new tricks.
