Recently, many of the items in Giulini’s CSO discography have been re-released. EMI compiled most of the original Angel recordings in Carlo Maria Giulini: The Chicago Recordings, and Deutsche Grammophon released all of their catalog in Giulini in America.

Dear Rosenthal Archivists:
I read from Giulini’s concert register that he performed Shostakovich #8 (and maybe #13 or 14?) with the CSO. Could it have been recorded and stored somewhere in the WFMT archive? I certainly would love to hear that!
Sincerely,
ML

Dear ML – Thank you for your message and yes, Giulini led performances of Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 14 in January 1972, no. 8 in October 1972, and no. 1 in November 1974. Unfortunately, this was during a period when CSO concerts were not being recorded for radio broadcast (the long-running syndication with WFMT resumed in 1976). So sadly, we do not have an audio record of those performances. Believe me, I would also love to hear it!
