Le Viaduc de Millau

Tuesday 12th June 2018

This morning we set off to visit the Le Viaduc de Millau. As it forms part of the A75 autoroute we drove a short way north of Millau to join the road then headed south toward the viaduct.

Having paid our €8.30 toll for the privilege of crossing this magnificent structure we almost immediately drove into the Aire du Viaduc which contains the new visitor information centre. This was a derelict farm when I was here last.

Having parked the car we climbed up a snaking pathway for a better view of Sir Norman Fosters masterpiece, passing an amusing sculpture enroute.

The view from the top never fails to impress the engineer in me. The Eiffel Tower could fit underneath the road deck!

After taking in the views from the top we returned to the Viaduc Expo.

The Expo contains all the information you could need about the viaduct design and construction. There is a magnificent model and some excellent drone footage, plus a video presentation.

The old farm buildings have been beautifully restored to house the visitor centre and the corridors serve to showcase the local area products

We returned to the car and re-joined the A75 to drive over the viaduct.

Le Viaduc de Millau really is a magnificent structure. I even think the Romans would be impressed 🙂
