Description

This Orton-Gillingham inspired Picture-Word Matching Activity may be used to introduce the second part of the OG Lesson plan and/or facilitate the student's multi-sensory experience overall. This resource brings in real-world elements to help students make connections as they work on improving their reading abilities. The visual memory and discrimination involved in this activity and the identification of patterns and relationships help students learn about representation and problem-solving. Additionally, matching and sorting activities contribute to the development of fine motor skills. This resource is suitable for both neurotypical and neurodivergent students facing learning disabilities and disorders; therefore, requiring reading intervention strategies. The colors, fonts, item dispositions, and every other aspect of the worksheet have been chosen with said students in mind. This is owing to the fact that, for inclusive and equitable quality education, we MUST tailor the education of our students to their unique abilities™!

I used this resource in my Middle School Special Education classroom comprised of students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, and aphasia. And, it was a great success. Since one of my students required additional instruction, attention, and guidance with word and sound recognition, I added this activity to the lesson to expose him to the target concept in a fun and engaging way. I pre-cut the pictures and the words, put the students in pairs, and assisted as necessary - for the most part, they were able to help each other. This was a great activity to introduce the second component of the OG Lesson Plan, Teaching a New Concept. I left the matched items on the desk for quick reference. The student who required extra help greatly benefited from being able to go back and check the spelling patterns whenever he needed to remember how to write.

PRACTICAL ADVICE
To promote inclusion, boost productivity, and instigate collaboration and fun, put students in pairs or small groups.
