Question

What are the 3 types of cytoskeleton?

Open in App
Solution

Cytoskeleton:

  1. The cytoskeleton is a very complex structure that is formed by interlinking between the protein filaments.
  2. These protein filaments are present in the cytoplasm itself but they are absent in bacteria and archaebacteria.
  3. Cytoskeleton can be of the following types:
  • Microtubules:
  1. Microtubules are one of the major components of the cytoskeleton.
  2. They contribute to the motility of the cell.
  3. It also helps in intracellular transport, maintains the cell shape, and also in cell division.
  • Microfilaments:
  1. Microfilaments are double-stranded molecules that are formed by fibrous actin.
  2. They also take part in the contraction of the cell as well as basic cellular movements.
  3. They help the cell in dividing into two and in certain types of cells such as macrophages it helps in amoeboid movements.
  • Intermediate filaments:
  1. The main function of intermediate filaments is to provide support as well as the structural formation of the cell.
  2. The intermediate filaments are not directly involved in cell movement.
  3. Intermediate filaments provide mechanical strength to the cells and tissues.
