Bearcats win six of 10 bouts in final EIWA dual

WASHINGTON, D.C. Binghamton wrestling won six of 10 bouts in the final EIWA dual of the season against American on Thursday afternoon at Bender Arena. Binghamton finished the EIWA campaign with a 4-5 record. Micah Roes, Nate Lucier, Michael Zarif, Brevin Cassella, Sam DePrez, and Jacob Nolan all picked up wins for the Bearcats. 

Head coach Kyle Borshoff (American '10) was honored at intermission. Borshoff, a two-time All-American, will be inducted into American University's Stafford H. "Pop" Cassell Hall of Fame tomorrow. Assistant Coach Phillip Barreiro (American'13) was also recognized at intermission with other American wrestling alumni.

"The team wrestled tough today. We won lots of close matches and came away with a win,"said Borshoff." American has some good dual meet wins this season, so I'm glad to get one against my alma mater."

Highlights 
  • Micah Roes scored a second period takedown, which proved to be the difference, in his tightly contested match with Maximilian Leete at 125 pounds. Roes prevailed with a 3-2 decision for his 11th win of the season. Leete entered the match with a team-high 19 victories.

  • In a back-and-forth battle at 141 pounds, Nate Lucier trailed 5-4 late in the third period, but came back and scored the winning takedown with less than 40 seconds left in the third. Lucier remained tough on top for the rest of the period and controlled Szerencsits until the final buzzer.
     
  • At 149 pounds, Michael Zarif scored three takedowns en route to a 8-3 decision victory over Patrick Ryan. Zarif scored a takedown in each of the three periods for his eighth dual victory of the season.
     
  • No. 31 Brevin Cassella won his 11th consecutive match at 165 pounds. Cassella prevailed, 4-3, over true freshman Caleb Campos. Cassella scored takedowns in each of the last two periods to grab a 4-0 lead, and held off a rally by Campos, after Campos scored a takedown in the final seconds to cut the deficit to one. Cassella improved to 16-4 on the season with the victory. Campos entered the match with a 17-8 record. 
     
  • Sam DePrez oulasted Lucas White to win a 7-5 decision at 174 pounds. DePrez picked up his 11th and his sixth dual victory of the season.
     
  • At 184 pounds, No. 23 Jacob Nolan won a 13-3 major decision over Collin Shannon. Nolan scored two first period takedowns and executed a six-point move late in the second period to extend his lead to 10-2. Nolan extended his win streak to six in dual matches.
