Michael Francis leads a program connected by friendship. In Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, each movement aims to capture the essence of a friend he lost in World War I. Concertmaster Jeffrey Multer on violin and Principal Cello Yoni Draiblate team up for Brahms’ Double Concerto, composed as a peace offering to a longtime friend. It was Brahms’ final work. In Enigma Variations – including the emotional Nimrod movement — Elgar adapts an original tune into 14 musical caricatures of his friends.

Tchaikovsky’s only Violin Concerto, one of the most popular concertos of all time, was a collaborative labor of love between the composer and his student, the violinist Iosif Kotek. In Elgar’s Enigma Variations, the composer depicts his closest friends and loved ones in each of its 14 variations. The program begins with Alissa Firsova’s Bride of the Wind, inspired by Oskar Kokoschka’s tempestuous affair with Alma Mahler following the death of her husband, Gustav.

Despite some disappointing early performances, Tchaikovsky grew to value his First Concerto above all his other piano compositions. The work that finally made Elgar famous was a happy accident. While improvising at the piano he came up with the tune he would later call “Enigma.” Inspired, he generated a slew of variations depicting his friends, all attempts to write in their voices.

Dima Slobodeniouk leads three works, all notable for their proximity to wartime. Edward Elgar’s Violin Concerto can be seen in retrospect as an idyllic calm before the storm of World War I. Adolphus Hailstork’s Lachrymosa: 1919 explores the Red Summer of 1919, a deadly backlash against Black American prosperity in the wake of the war. Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements was the composer’s dark reaction to the universal devastation of World War II.

Concertmaster Rimma Bergeron-Langlois takes the stage to perform Dvořák’s Violin Concerto blending artistry and musical excellence. Join us for the Jackson Symphony Orchestra's 75th Diamond Celebration on April 26, 2025, at 7:30 PM, held at the prestigious Potter Center. This landmark event marks a significant milestone in the orchestra's history, celebrating 75 years of musical excellence and community engagement. The evening promises an unforgettable concert experience, featuring a unique collaboration with esteemed partners including the Jackson School of the Arts, Jackson Youth Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Chelsea, and Jackson Chorale.

The concert will showcase a collage of captivating music, nostalgic videos, and reflections on the orchestra's impactful history. Under the baton of special guests Stephen Osmond, Richard Sherman, Ralph Votapek, and Mitsuru Kubo, the program will span classics to contemporary pieces, highlighting the diversity and spirit of collaboration that defines the Jackson Symphony Orchestra.

The program schedule includes masterpieces such as Johann Strauss, Jr.'s "Fledermaus: Overture," César Franck's "Symphonic Variations," Edward Elgar's "Nimrod from Enigma Variations," and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Finale: Allegro con fuoco from Symphony No.4," among others. The concert will have a runtime of approximately 2 hours.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a free, interactive lecture at 6:30 PM, offering insights into the evening's program and the opportunity to engage with the music on a deeper level.

Following the concert, the celebration continues with an afterparty sponsored by Rehmann. This event offers a great opportunity to mingle with musicians, guest artists, composers, and fellow symphony fans. The afterparty will feature entry, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks, all included in the $20 ticket price.

It’s a special thrill when Yo-Yo Ma appears with your Calgary Phil! Don’t miss your chance to see the distinguished cellist perform one of the cherished works of the repertoire, interpreted with his inimitable flair, dignity, and eloquence. Music Director Rune Bergmann then conducts the Orchestra in music by his fellow countryman Edvard Grieg: beloved Grieg Selections from the composer’s Peer Gynt Suites filled with his signature melodic charm.

Daniel Harding leads The Cleveland Orchestra from the Miami seaside to the farthest reaches of the solar system! Elgar’s sublime song cycle "Sea Pictures" provides open water for Avery Amereau to demonstrate her rich, velvety contralto. Later, Holst’s orchestral suite "The Planets" conjures a galaxy’s worth of emotions — from the bellicose dissonance of “Mars, the Bringer of War” to the electrifying “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity.”

Ozinga Chapel’s towering, 46-rank pipe organ comes alive as IPO lowers the curtain on its 47th season. Possessing nearly unparalleled technical facility, a brilliant ear for tonal color, and innovative programming style, Peter Richard Conte is one of the most admired orchestral organists of this era. Appointed in 1989 as the fourth Wanamaker Grand Court Organist, Conte presides over the world’s largest fully functioning musical instrument (29,000 pipes) at Macy’s Center City in downtown Philadelphia. The epic evening concert will also feature 2023/24 IPO Composer-in-Residence Oswald Huỳnh’s third commission for IPO.
