CEDAR RAPIDS, IA. – The Adrian College Women's Wrestling team competed at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships in Iowa over the weekend, with six of its athletes competing for All-American status amongst numerous schools across Division I, II, and III.
Bulldogs
Emily Mendez,
Carleigh Czerneski,
Angela LoRusso,
Taylor Cutler,
Nyla Burgess, and
Xsaria Puente all competed on the national stage for Adrian after qualifying for the Championship tournament.
The top-eight in each weight class after the conclusion of competition would receive All-American status while No. 1 in each class would be crowned as a National Champion.
The Bulldogs battled hard on day one on Friday with all six of their wrestlers competing.
Mendez at 109 (3-2) lost in the blood round after taking out a former All-American (DII) the round before.
LoRusso at 123 (2-2) also lost in the blood round. She avenged her only loss at Regionals in the process.
Burgess at 155 went 2-2 but was eliminated before reaching All-American status.
Cutler at 143 went 0-2 losing to the No. 2 ranked wrestler from Iowa (DI) and then a tough loss to a DII opponent in her next match.
Puente went 0-2 while battling two former All-Americans. She wrestled well but it was not enough as her weekend was then over.
Czerneski was the only Bulldog to advance to day two. On day one, she lost her first match to the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the country in DI and then ripped off three straight wins against DI, DIII, and DII opponents to become an All-American. Czerneski would beat two former All-Americans in that stretch to claim the honor. On day two, Czerneski managed to place sixth in her weight class and officially earn All-American status.
Czerneski will be honored at the podium during the awards presentation later tonight upon the completion of wrestling.
